Taiko, what is it?

 

In a simplest term, taiko (太鼓)is a word for "Large Drum" in Japanese. Usually made from a single hollowed out tree, both opening covered with cow hide secured with nails. Our Taiko style is known as, "Kumi Daiko (組太鼓)" a group taiko where several Taiko player plays together as group.

 

There are many sizes and shapes of Taiko but most commmon type is "Barrel" body taiko. (See the background picture)

 

Note:

"Daiko" is a dakuon (濁音 - Muddy pronouciation) version of "Taiko" た(Ta)→だ(Da)
